GitHub Advanced Security and Defender for Cloud DevOps
What it is
GitHub Advanced Security provides security features such as code scanning, secret scanning, and dependency review/Dependabot capabilities in supported GitHub and Azure DevOps contexts. Defender for Cloud DevOps Security connects DevOps security findings with cloud security posture and remediation workflows.
Why it exists
Security scanning only helps if teams see, prioritize, fix, and track findings. These services connect code, dependency, secret, and container findings to the engineering workflow.
Key ideas
- Code scanning looks for code weaknesses; secret scanning looks for exposed credentials; dependency scanning identifies vulnerable components. They answer different questions.
- Fail or gate a pipeline based on a documented severity, exploitability, and exception policy—not merely because any finding exists.
- A scanned repository is not automatically secure. Protect tokens, review third-party actions/tasks, pin dependencies where appropriate, and track remediation.
- Do not publish secrets in a “test” repository. Revoke and rotate an accidentally exposed credential even if a scanner detects it.
