Staging environment
What it is
A staging environment is a preproduction environment used to validate a release under conditions as close to production as practical before wider exposure.
Why it exists
It provides a controlled place to run integration, smoke, performance, deployment, and rollback checks without risking the production service.
Key ideas
- Keep configuration, identity, and dependencies representative enough for the question being tested, while using safe test data.
- A staging environment is a deployment target and governance boundary; it is not automatically an App Service deployment slot, though a slot can implement a staging route.
- Define the promotion signal and rollback rule before deployment.
