Azure Backup reports and alerts

What it is

Azure Backup reports summarize protection, jobs, storage, policies, and recovery activity. Azure Monitor-based alerts notify operators about failures and selected recovery-data events.

Why it exists

A backup policy is only an intention. Reports and alerts reveal whether jobs actually ran, whether restores failed, and whether protection has changed. A restore test provides the strongest evidence that recovery is usable.

Key ideas

  • Send the relevant vault diagnostic data to Log Analytics for Backup Reports and longer-term analysis; workbooks present the results.
  • Use Azure Monitor alerts for the backup events your team must act on, then route notification through an action group.
  • Review job success, protected-item coverage, retention, restore results, and security events—not only whether a policy exists.
  • Treat a restore test as the final verification of a backup design.

Northwind example

Northwind sends vault diagnostics to Log Analytics and routes a backup-job failure alert to the on-call action group. The next day, Priya checks whether the alert was received and whether the job was retried or fixed. Once each quarter, the team restores a representative workload and records the time and outcome. A green dashboard without a tested restore is useful evidence, but not proof of recovery.
