DevOps traceability

What it is

DevOps traceability links a requirement or incident to its work item, branch, commit, pull request, build, package, deployment, test evidence, and release documentation.

Why it exists

Teams need to answer “why did this change exist?”, “what reached production?”, and “which customers or services are affected?” without reconstructing history from chat messages.

Key ideas

  • Use stable work-item and incident identifiers in branch names, commits, pull requests, and release notes where the platform supports it.
  • Capture automated evidence: test results, build ID, artifact version, environment, approval/check outcome, and deployment timestamp.
  • Traceability supports audit and incident response, but it must not become bureaucratic busywork. Automate links from Git and pipelines where possible.
  • A dashboard is only trustworthy when its source events and definitions are clear.
